
The Board of Community Foundation of Louisa County hosted an Awards Breakfast Monday, January 17 at the Letts Community Center. Forty-four grants, totaling $86,604 were awarded to local non-profit organizations, schools and agencies. This is the 7th year grants have been awarded. Download the full list (.pdf, ~15KB)
In total, 263 grants, totaling $478,000 have been granted to 90 separate organizations in the county since 2005. The Community Foundation received these funds from the State of Iowa as a distributed share of gambling profits. Twenty-five percent of the funds received from the State must be invested in the Louisa County Endowment Fund, and 75% can be awarded for local, non-profit initiatives. Earnings from Community Foundation endowment funds are used to support local, quality of life initiatives, such as the grant awards.
2011 Community Foundation Board members include: Ken Purdy, Chairman, Rondalyn Weyrick, Vice-Chairman, Jim Crawford, Jim Everett, Vivan Jennings, Tonya Lanz, Jeanne Mott, Gary Todd, Trish Woepking and Kent Wollenhaupt. The Board recognized retiring board member, Nancy McGill, for her service as a charter board member.
Organizations receiving grants included; Columbus Community Development Ctr, The Keep Columbus Beautiful Organization, Friends of Columbus Junction Library, Columbus FFA Soils Judging Team, Girl Scouts of Easter Iowa & Western Ill, Hays-Scott Legion Post 112, Hope Haven Area Development Ctr, Keck Memorial Library, Friends of Keck Memorial Library, L&M Elementary School, L&M School - Parents as Teachers Program, Letts Public Library, LIFE Microlending, Inc, Louisa County Ambulance, Louisa County Conservation Board, Louisa County Emergency Management, Louisa County Extension 4-H, Louisa County Fair Board, Louisa County Habitat for Humanity, Louisa County Public Health, Lutheran Services in Iowa, Mellinger Memorial Library, Morning Sun Community Betterment, Morning Sun Development Corp, Morning Sun Lions Club, Morning Sun Volunteer Fire Dept. Oakville Volunteer Association. Friends of Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge, Stork's Nest of Louisa County, Tri-Rivers Conservation Foundation, Wapello Ambulance, Wapello Elementary Talented & Gifted, Wapello Jr/Sr High School Library, Wapello High School, Chief Wapello Days, Inc.. City of Wapello and YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter.
If the program is continued by the State, grant applications may be submitted beginning October 1, 2011 and will be due December 1.
